  Smiley First-Aid Kit
review by Belinda Morris

Being something of a beauty junkie, most products, from the humblest lip salve to an eye-popping designer eye-shadow palette or gorgeous bath oil are likely to make me happy and induce a small smile — if not a broad beam. It's the nature of the thing:  glorious colour combinations, soothing lotions, feel-and-do- you-good fragrances — what's not to love?

Beauty Tried & Tested: Smiley First-Aid Kit

So I was intrigued by the idea of a whole collection of toiletries whose sole aim is to make you happy. Well, goodness only knows we need it at the moment, so it has to be worth a try. From France, the unisex Smiley range of bath and body products — designed by the cult artist Ora-Ito — has been created through a combination of technical wizardry and essential oil know-how with the express purpose of inducing feelings of joy.

Certainly the packaging is quite perky — white and yellow, to complement the Smiley icon, which is a symbol so familiar that apparently it enjoys something like 96% global recognition as a brand of happiness (it was born in 1971 for the peace and love generation). The Kit, which contains the eau de parfum, two fizzy bath tablets, a few samples sachets of the massage oil and a small tube of the body gel, is a handy introduction to the line and would make a fantastic gift for anyone in need of a little cheering up (a student in the throes of exams comes to mind) or conversely anyone who has something to celebrate (passing a driving test, falling in love....)

The Smiley range is fairly young in its presentation, but in its execution has a much broader appeal. The combination of psycho-stimulants Theobromine, which apparently reduces stress, and Phenathylamine, which encourages feelings of joy and euphoria, is a heady one. Add to that orange, bergamot, praline and myrrh and you've got a scent that really is sparkly and uplifting. So, does it work? Do I feel happier? Well the sun has just come out, so I've lost my control element, but I love the fragrance, with its zingy, fruity top notes and a soft, musky and powdery heart. And the bath tablets turn the bath water into a scented, milky spa experience, so I now want a whole tinful of happiness.
