Beauty Tried & Tested: Neal’s Yard Frankincense Facial Serum

Neal’s Yard Frankincense Facial Serum
review by Charlotte Burn-Callander

As the weather hots up it’s wise to follow a ‘less-is-more’ approach to skincare. We know to apply an SPF every day under make-up as an anti-ageing safeguard, but product after product can overload the skin and force us to re-evaluate our whole routine. We don’t need a heavy moisturiser – heat makes sebum glands more active – but skin can still get dehydrated.

This is where a serum comes in, and Neal’s Yard have made one of the best. Known for their superior organic ingredients, the Frankincense Facial Serum is a powerhouse of nourishing phyto-nutrients and antioxidants like gotu kola, Tocopherol (Vitamin E) and blueberry oil. Antioxidants may be a beauty buzzword but they really do make a difference to the way you look and feel. Eat them and look for their inclusion in skincare products to combat wrinkles, age spots and loss of elasticity.

I was so impressed with this serum, no easy feat for a product cynic like myself. My bathroom is strewn with half-finished pots and tubes of ineffective hype. But substance wins the day here: this serum works. It’s white with a creamy texture, light to apply and quickly absorbed.

Massage a couple of drops into damp skin after cleansing. I rested a hot flannel over my face to open pores beforehand, but that’s just me. The smell is divine, the essential oils of Bergamot and Mandarin give you a real aromatherapy hit.

My skin just loved it, and I noticed a difference right away. My skin tone evened, my pores tightened, I looked brighter and more ‘awake’. Neal’s Yard have bottled that plumped-up look that we’re all after, and without harsh retinols and AHAs. Love love love.

For the first time in a long time I can say that I’m a fan of a product for life. The dropper is a bit clumsy though, I would prefer a more exact measure of serum, especially for the price at 30mls. But nothing’s gonna stop me buying that next bottle….
