‘Hands Up!’ this season with M&S’ new Autumn/Winter Nail Colours
written by Valerie Tesler

In recent years the ‘in’ nail colour of the season seems to be changing almost as fast as we can hot foot it to our nearest beauty counter, meaning that any self-respecting beauty fashionista has now built up an impressive collection of corals, oranges and edgy yellows and blues for summer and gunmetal greys, classic rouge noirs, purples and navy for winter.

Beauty Tried & Tested: ‘Hands Up!’ this season with M&S’ new Autumn/Winter Nail Colours

While some women always seem to have the perfect nails; sporting a flawlessly maintained manicure in the latest ‘must-have’, right-on-trend chic shade of the season, which just happens to be ideally suited to their skin tone, others try as they might but can’t avoid chipping their polish ten minutes after its applied, have nails that are always slightly smudged and are often wondering if there’s a trendy ‘new’ colour they should be wearing that would look just as good on them as on everyone else.

This season the challenges of navigating the complexities of the nail colour chart and applying the polish professionally has been made easy by good old Marks and Spencer, who have put together the ideal autumn/winter 09 colour palette, featuring dark hues such as ink, aubergine and chocolate; opulent jewel inspired shades such as kingfisher and jewel; rich berry and wine shades including raspberry, cranberry and bordeaux; and a classic bright red, which never goes out of style – choice enough to ensure there’s a shade (or three) to suit everyone.

As always, the colours to be seen in at this time of year are the dark tones such as Autograph’s ultimate wear nail polish (an ‘instant and lasting gloss, with ceramic technology to improve resistance against chipping and scuffing’) in Chocolate, £6.50; a glossy, chic, warm dark burgundy brown that comes in a tall bottle with a long brush for an easy application, that needs two coats to build up the colour. This is a shade that also suits pale skin tones and looks fashionably dark without appearing too severe or Goth looking.

Both the Chocolate and Autograph’s Ultimate Wear Nail Polish in Dark Aubergine, £6.50, are subtle alternatives from the often-ubiquitous rouge noir shades, and the slightly shimmery, trendy, deep purple Aubergine is a great choice to vamp it up with a glam evening look and the ideal shade to carry you through the party season.

This ‘high gloss, fast dry, chip resistant’ shade comes in a small square bottle and can be applied easily, dries quickly and also comes in jewel colours including Bordeaux, a classic and elegant rich dark berry red, which can be worn all year round and will look good on your toes as well.

A few days later and miraculously my chic dark nails are still intact giving me the perfect excuse to wave my hands about….
