We’re not far into 2010 and so far we’ve been subjected to snow, sleet, frost and rain – is it any wonder the temptation to stay under the duvet is overwhelming at times? Thank goodness for central heating.
But when it comes to our skin, it’s those extreme changes between heat inside and cold outside that can cause havoc – redness, dry spots, flakiness, chapped lips, all commonplace conditions for many of us.
It’s easy to forget about skincare while bundled up under layers of jumpers and coats, but this is the very time to stick with it; with such skin-unfriendly weather a regular daily regime is vital – after all, warmer times are just around the corner.
Face it!
Use a gentle cleanser to remove makeup and grime – choosing one with a built-in exfoliator, such as Marks & Spencer Formula Age Defence Gentle Exfoliating Face Wash (£5), will help remove dead skin cells and brighten up your complexion at the same time. This also includes vitamins C and B5, which are known to promote healthy skin.
Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! It is crucial to stave off the worse effects of the weather and to keep your skin hydrated and soft long-term. If you find your regular cream or lotion doesn’t perform as well as usual then look for an alternative, preferably with an SPF of at least factor 15 to protect your skin, even in winter.
(If your favourite moisturiser does not contain an SPF don’t worry, consider adding an SPF booster to ensure protection, such as Dermalogica’s Solar Defense Booster SPF30 (£27.60).)
Ultra Hydrating Cream (£22) from New Zealand-based Trilogy is thick but non-greasy and is quickly absorbed. This contains rejuvenating manuka honey, coconut, avocado and evening primrose oils, all great for your skin.
For an extra hydrating hit consider a serum, such as Crystal Clear Intense Anti-ageing Serum (£60), said to boost collagen production, tone and strengthen.
Skin repairs itself as you sleep so give it a helping hand with an overnight moisturiser. Dermalogica’s Super Rich Repair (£50) while not specifically intended as a night cream is heavyweight enough to last until you wake and leaves skin beautifully soft.
For the fragile skin around your eyes, go for a dedicated cream or gel such as Ahava’s Mineral Eye Cream (£21).
And don’t forget your lips – they are quick to dry out and chapped lips can be incredibly sore. Korres offers a tinted lip butter in a variety of shades (£6) while herbal hero Bach comes to the rescue with its Rescue Balm (£5.75) containing natural flower essences.
