The Spirit of Elemis
review by Belinda Morris
Fans of the luxury spa and skincare brand Elemis will be thrilled to learn that to celebrate its 20th anniversary the company has launched it’s first ever fragrance.
In fact it is surprising that it has taken Elemis this long to introduce a perfume, given that the nature-based products and treatments revolve around the potency of active aromas. As director in charge of these two areas, Noella Gabriel, puts it: “aromas that allow your spirits to soar or help you feel more grounded.”
Well, she doesn’t promise that that the new Eau de Parfum (£35 - 28ml) can do either of those two things, but needless to say, her long association with and understanding of the finest aromatic ingredients, has led Gabriel to a multi-facted fragrance, that has been created in Grasse – the home of classic perfumes.
The initial burst from the slim, clean-lined bottle (that comes with its own velvet travelling pouch) is fresh, uplifting and zesty (that will be the elemi and sweet grasses). After a few minutes, the sharpness settles into something softer with a hint of the seaside – a marine accord combined with rich vetiver. Slipping into treatment speak, this, says Elemis, will help to ‘clear and centre the mind’. So not just a pretty smell then?
As the fragrance dries down further, the sparkliness warms and sweetens even more with the notes of patchouli, gaiacwood and oak moss – but every now and then the refreshing seashore scent seeps out.
As someone who generally prefers earthier, spicier, headier fragrances, I expected to move out of my comfort zone with this scent, but it has me snared – a perfect summer scent (should that ever happen).
