Beauty Tried & Tested: The Power of Flowers - Jane Packer Fig, Sandalwood, Amber

The Power of Flowers
by Belinda Morris

Given that she has been an internationally-renowned florist for many years – arguably one of the first celebrity florists, if such a thing exists – it's strange that it has taken Jane Packer so long to create her own fragrance. As it is, a great many 'names' who would appear to have a rather tenuous link to the world of perfumery have seen fit to present us with their very own scent – whether we want it or not.

Someone who has devoted their working life to flowers would, on the otherhand, have a pretty valid excuse for exploring this expansion to their business... not to mention handy credentials.

Anyway, be that as it may, London-based florist Jane Packer has now launched her first collection of fragrances – and if the one I have tried is anything to go by, i'm very glad she has.

I could have picked any of the five fragrances – all of which have been inspired by the very many flowers that she has worked with over the years (two decades in fact), but I chose the one that is the least florally-sounding: 'Fig, Sandalwood, Amber'. It seemed like a combination that would be warming and autumnal. And so it is.

The first impression is woody, earthy and, yes, figgy – a subtle sweetness that grows stronger after the first few minutes on the skin. With time the scent becomes drier, dustier – a sort of war, churchy smell like old pews, incense and candles... lovely. Not an over-powering smell at all, it nonetheless hovers around and is still there at bedtime – the figgy sweetness lingering on.

The tall, slim rounded bottle – simple and elegant – is topped by a bud-shaped black cap, so it also has dressing table appeal.

the other four fragrances in the collection could all conceivably appeal to the same woman, but for different times and for different moods: Red Rose, Black Violet, Cyclamen; Gardenia, Cedar Wood, Patchouli; Iris, Jasmine, Sandalwood; Green Orchid, Vetiver, Lemon Grass – and all are accompanied by Bath Milk and Body Cream.
