Fit Flops for Him
written by Belinda Morris
For almost two years now my partner has been watching me (and more specifically my legs and bottom!) benefit from wearing Fit Flops. I've got them in all their various guises, from the basic webbing ones to the sparkly and the furry, and they get rotated according to the seasons or what I'm wearing. My regular slippers have become redundant and my wardrobe of decorative summer flats (being simply that – decorative – rather than useful) have been gathering dust, along with my common-or-garden flip flops.
Anyway, having been initially rather sceptical, amused even, about my Fit Flops, the
partner then become interested as he started to witness results. Being a runner, he's a bit of an anorak on the sport shoe front, so was casting an almost professional eye on my specialist footwear. What could they do for his pins? On more than one occasion I caught him inspecting the men's versions when they started to appear in the shops – but he wasn't sure if the thong and slide styles were 'quite him'.
However, the new FF Supertone™ M Series sneaker style (£90, sizes 7-12) is very much him. When he's not in trainers or work shoes he's in sports-style footwear, so this low-key plimsoll-like Fit Flop ticks all the boxes. And unlike the thong and clog styles, you really can't detect the inner working – the special sole that does all the hard work. Or, to be more precise, the 'multi-tasking Microwobbleboard™' midsole which has been 'biomechanically engineered' to challenge your leg muscles more–via your feet.
Reading up on my Fit Flops my partner was curious to find out whether the technology involved might ease the strains of his generally aching hamstrings. I'm not sure that men study their own bottoms like we do (ours and theirs!) but he did express a desire to see his legs take on a little more muscle definition. They look fine to me, but, whatever...
So, he's been wearing these rather smart grey versions for about three weeks and after initially declaring them to be 'weird' to walk in, now says they're extremely comfortable. And given that they're designed to relieve stress on the knee, ankle and hip joints as well as help take pressure off joints, by reducing shock (up to 22%) when walking, they must be doing some good – even if it's hard to pinpoint exactly how and where. There are also air perforations in the nubuck upper (together with a breathable lining) which is another plus for a man on his feet all day!
