Designer Profile: Tatiana Wonga Designer Profile: Tatiana Wonga

Tatiana Wonga has recently launched a collection characterised by its clear line, master cut and original designs. We caught up with her at London Fashion Expo to discuss her inspiration and starting a label in a recession year.

Which kind of fashion training do you have?
I have recently completed a BA (Hons) degree course in Fashion Textiles Enterprise from Portsmouth University.

Was creating your own line always your dream?
It’s always been a dream of mine. When you’re obsessed with dressing Barbie dolls and designing paper dresses at a young age, you just know it’s your calling. In my childhood days, I was always in and out of hospitals, so I have always wanted to do something positive and help others.... I loved fashion and everything related to it, so today I’m in a quest to finding ways of helping others through fashion.

Are you worried about the fact that you are starting your company in the current economic climate?
There is always fear when starting up a company in a fierce and competitive business such as fashion, regardless of the current economic climate. I don’t see it as an obstacle though because my designs speak for themselves. If I am to survive the next few years in the industry, I can’t afford to have any doubts or fears.

Which type of feedback have you had about your clothes so far?
The amount of positive feedbacks I have been getting has been absolutely overwhelming! From people placing orders and boutiques requesting to stock my clothes... I am still getting my way around it! It is so encouraging and refreshing to see people appreciate the hard work I have put into my designs! It motivates me to go out there and fight for it even more.

What are you inspired by?
Nature, architectural objects and geometric shapes, especially when I’m working on a collection. As a whole, anything and everything could inspire me, from everyday life to philosophy.

How would you define your line style?
It is about the contrast of urban shapes with a sporty spirit, reworked with intriguing details and the elegance of the sharp tailoring. It is innovative, sophisticated yet edgy!

What sets you apart from other new designers?
It’s simple: the exquisite craftsmanship that goes into my pieces as well as the structured and architectural feel. Each item is carefully handcrafted and moulded into a creation with my signature detailing.

Where can people buy you clothes?
I will be selling at various online boutiques and stores across the UK but none has been confirmed yet. Look out for more information on our website; www.tatianawonga.com.
