Father Of My Children Cinema Review
Written by Sav D’Souza
Rambling drama that fades into insignificance.
The movie opens with Gregoire Canvel (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing), a film producer, who on the surface has a very idyllic little life; wife, great kids, house in the country but he’s also obsessed with work and professionally and financially all is not well. His film production company has huge debts and his recent projects continue to be dogged with costly setbacks.
Although deemed worthy of some badge of honour when it played at Cannes there is very little to recommend from this very pedestrian production.
The first part of the movie focuses on Canvel dealing with the crisis that is rapidly infringing on his life while the second part focuses on the family dealing with tragedy.
For a drama the movie has very little actual dramatic moments. There is one kinda dramatic moment and then its over and we are back to monotone.
It’s a film that just ambles on without every gripping, entertaining or being in any way interesting which is quite a feat. In fact there’s a lot of pointless stuff going on. There’s the overly difficult actor and potential Russian money men that are both sad clichés. Aspects of Canvel’s life are discovered later which you think might add a dimension but no nothing.
The first part of the movie focuses on Canvel dealing with the crisis that is rapidly infringing on his life while the second part focuses on the family dealing with tragedy.
The acting is contrived as you can see the strings at work in most of the performances. It’s that type of movie that tries really hard to have ‘naturalistic’ and ‘normal’ characters and situations but that just ends up being quite dull and boring. You never feel any emotional attachment to the characters or that you are getting a close inspection of the family dealing with stuff. It’s all too detached, ultimately like a movie equivalent of looking at holiday snaps of people you don’t know or care much about.
