The Hangover Part II Cinema Review

6/10The Hangover Part II Cinema Review
written by Jey Matienzo

The Wolfpack is back and in Bangkok. Stu (Helms, The Office), the next to be married, again, but this time to Lauren (Chung, Sucker Punch), tries to get away with an iHop bachelor brunch before flying out. Of course he doesn’t and even after a few sealed beers – so as not to get ‘roofied’ again – the crazy blackout relentlessly begins. As expected, we find the gang dazed and confused recovering from a flurry of shenanigans; from a tattooed face and a shaved head, to a gunshot wound and a severed finger.

I tried really hard to love this film, because the first was so gob-smackingly funny, but I just couldn’t muster up as much enthusiasm for it. The only thing that saved me from losing all interest was Alan (Galifuanakis, It’s Kind of a Funny Story); he really stole the show. From the moment he slammed a syringe into his thigh, I knew at least his part was going to be quirky. His downright weirdness notches the film’s humour to a different level and I looked forward to what he was going to say next. With the help of Mr. Chow too (Jeong, Knocked Up) and a cheeky little monkey, the film just about floats. Just.

Part II feels a little more serious this time; involving family traditions and ideals, and Teddy (Lee), Lauren’s trophy younger brother. Using the exact same formula as Part I, we kind of do and don’t know what to expect. The majority of the scenes are somewhat forgettable but the ones that do stick leave your eyes popping out and chuckling a long time after they pass. The clichés are played on really well, especially the bit in the strip club, so look out for those as they don’t disappoint! As consolation though to the sporadic comedy, the best parts of the film are, as before, showcased in snapshots at the end of the film as ‘all the bits in between’.

My sum up: same gags, different city. A watchable, although poor sequel. But Alan makes you wish monkeys could Skype too.
