Explosions In The Sky On Tour
In keeping with the billowing instrumental ‘post-rock’ style for which they have become acclaimed, Explosions in the Sky have crept steadily onto the scene since their first album, How Strange Innocence, was released in 2000 - reaching a suitably fervent climax of popularity in the last year or so. Currently on a mammoth world tour, following the release of their sixth (if you include the soundtrack to Friday Night Lights) album in 2007, the Texan four-piece deliver the kind of live performances that leave one feeling both bruised and exhilarated.
Their intensely blistering, almost cinematic episodes (they can hardly be called ‘songs’) induce a feeling of euphoric discombobulation that is the musical equivalent of drunken, fluttering room-spin, minus the nausea. The recent swell of interest in the band may also be partly due to their involvement with hip festival organisers, All Tomorrow’s Parties. Following in the footsteps of Sonic Youth, Mogwai and Autechre among others, Explosions in the Sky are curating one of ATP’s two main weekend events (at Minehead Butlin’s Holiday camp) this year.
The band’s influence has given rise to an inspired and eclectic line-up of equally interesting and very ‘now’ artists, ncluding Broken Social Scene, Iron & Wine, Dinosaur Jr, Mono and Fourtet - so it looks set to be one of the best alternative festival options this summer. And self catering accommodation is included in the ticket price, so you don’t even have to rough it in a tent! If you have yet to experience the incomparable aural onslaught that is Explosions in the Sky, there is still time to catch them live on one of their remaining UK dates, or at the ATP festival in May, for which tickets are now on sale.
Explosions in the Sky’s latest album, All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone, was released in
2007 on Bella Union.
