Today’s discotheque scene would be a lot poorer without the arrival of Hed Kandi and its recent offering, ‘Twisted Disco’, is certainly among the most daring of its growing portfolio of musical discovery. In fact, with this intriguing double-CD album, it is becoming increasingly difficult to discern the types of music for which this house is becoming renowned.

A great many of its 24 different tracks will be surprisingly familiar to listeners and some of them may have simply never established the sheer dance-ability of the original sounds. Inevitably packed with remixes of tracks as varied as Kurd Maverick doing ‘Blue Monday’, or ‘If You Knew’ by Chris Lake, featuring Nastala, it is consummately easy to become highly excited by the electrified remixes, complete with their distorted and techy beat sequences.

Yet, a number of the tracks are almost as naked as the day they first appeared, relying instead on a vocal loop and a synthesizer enhanced bassline, while others such as ‘Everybody Be Somebody’ by Thomas Gold & Matthias Menck involve a restyle of such perceptive brilliance that it is hard to remember that this was a disco ‘hit’ back in the 1990s. The same applies to ‘Now You’re Gone’ by Juan Kidd & Felix Baumgartner featuring Lisa Millett, another revitalised track from the same era that has been slam-dunked up to date by Hed Kandi’s mastery of the electronic decks and the remixing studio.

Yet, the resultant sounds need not be restricted to endless dance floor nights, as they are actually good enough for all-day consumption and remain more than just cool and uplifting. Hed Kandi talks about its journey through sound but this is more of a holiday of Grand Tour proportions, tackling a vast musical spectrum of remarkable unpredictability that remains ‘house’, yet strangely multilateral in its approach and delivery.
