Sleek Speak
Written by Ben Norum
An invite to the launch of some speakers in Kensington isn’t one you would normally expect to receive. But then again, these are no ordinary speakers. In the words of one of the designers, “What we designed is not a loudspeaker, what we designed is vibrating air.” If this sounds a tad pretentious, that’s probably because it is but surely this is par for the course for the latest product to hit The Conran Shop in South Kensington.
Designer Henri Seydoux and Sir Terence Conran brought out the glitz to unveil Zikmu Parrot by Starck (you could tell it was going to be trendy by the number of names it has) but, once revealed, the speakers are enough to hold your attention. Free-standing and triumphant in their waist height curve of black gloss, they are impressive in stature but light weight and hollow – all part of Henri Seydoux’s aim of creating the most advanced technology with minimal materials.
So advanced is this technology that an extra dimension is created by vibration which, apparently, means that the “air itself comes to life”. Whilst this would be hard to verify, very clear sound can certainly be accounted for. More tangibly, the design incorporates Bluetooth, WiFi, mobile and MP3 compatibility meaning you can play your tunes wherever they’re stored – you can even connect a good old-fashioned CD player if you’re not quite as immaterial as the speakers themselves.
If you want the fanciest speakers on the block, they’re available now to buy from The Conran Shop or www.conranshop.co.uk and come with a RRP of £1000 – a figure as rounded as the curved design. Let’s face it, they were never going to be cheap but that’s the price of high style… |
