Detroit Grand Pubahs – ButtFUnkula and The Remixes From Earth Album Review

Not much to recommend from this album apart from a couple of good tunes.
The album sees a host of producers put their spin on DGP tracks.
After a promising start with the catchy infectious “After School Special (Alexander Robotnick remix) it’s a very steep hurtling downwards spiral for this distinctly lacklustre offering of remixes.
Listening to this compilation was like waiting for your bus to arrive with wide eyed expectation to only be disappointed by a series of buses that were not your required number. Too many tracks just lingered without the introduction of any injection of adrenalin.
Some of the tunes seemed to be like unfunny soulless versions of Flight of the Concordes interludes similar to early Detroit Grand Pubahs underground efforts like “Sandwiches”.
You have to tough out the tedium until you get to track 7 “Skydive From Venus (Deetron remix)” to get a decent tune with the funky, violin inspired operatic beat.
Two decent tracks from 12 is not a great return for your buck and the phrase back to the drawing board springs to mind. This is a shame because if it could have delivered more remixes like ‘After School Special’ and ‘Skydive From Venus’ it could have been different.
For the most part this is tediously uninspiring minimal, techno-electro of the nondescript variety that fails to move or elicit much emotion apart from boredom. |
