Freestylers - Past, Present & Future EP Review

2/10Freestylers - Past, Present & Future EP Review

Not much to shout about in the release of this distinctly below par EP.

The first track ‘Cracks’ has the ironic lyrics ‘about the cracks beginning to show’ and there are plenty of cracks and flaws showing in this for sure. It’s layered and shows a level of technical mastery but just results in a bland techno/breakbeat/house ensemble.

The second track on the EP ‘This City’ opens well with some nice catchy vocals which with better compliment could have held it together but just descends into just another house tune of the nondescript variety. Technically again it’s competently produced as is the whole EP but it needs more than that to be a hit.

‘Bounce to This’ is the final track on the EP and probably the worst of the trio. It sounds derivative of dance tracks that worked back in the day but just sounds dated now, the reggae heavy dancey vibe is old ground and done a lot better in the past. OK you don’t expect Ivor Novello winning lyrics on dance tracks to make it funky but Did you come to party, yeah we came to party, did you come to dance, yeah we came to dance, move your hands high in the air, dance to this. Nuff said.
