Moloh - A Twist On The Classics
Written by Belinda Morris
You've seen the images from the international catwalk shows and you've glanced in a few high street windows and eeeek! Some of it looks a bit scary doesn't it? What's a girl supposed to wear this season if she feels, for one reason or another, a bit past the sequin leggings and spiked leather jacket combo? How's she supposed to feel about extreme shoulders - for instance - if she did that the first time round? And don't get me started on thigh high boots and 'fierce' heels...
Ok, fashion's great and obviously has it's truly fabulous moments, but when it tips over into the realms of fantasy, it's comforting to discover a label that isn't being dictated to by its whims — a label that can truthfully be described as "wearable" and for "real women", but certainly can't be condemned to the "safely classic" category.
Moloh is one such label. It began as an on-line and mail order collection, which reached a wider audience when it opened a shop in Tetbury in Gloucestershire last year. Now, in a bold and cunning bid to broaden its reach further still, the owner and designer Caroline Smiley has brought moloh to London, with a new, light, airy and spacious boutique in the heart of Pimlico.
At first glance the clothes might be described as "country", but we're definitely not talking sensible quilt jackets, pie-crust collar blouses and deerstalkers here. Sure there are tweeds, leathers and cosy knits, but there are also leopard prints, random patchworks, taffetas and butter soft suedes - sometimes all in the same outfit. Caroline's love of colour and texture ensures that moloh is fun, sexy and smart. It's as much about how different pieces work together that creates the mood, which means that moloh has an appeal across all ages and customer types.
If you're looking for a slightly off-beat, quirky work outfit, there are jackets with military or historic references, that look great with easy wrap skirts (I like the one in a patchwork of masculine fabrics). The electric blue taffeta riding-style jacket gives a vibrant edge to a short wrap around plaid skirt and would be perfect for a winter wedding (guest, not bride, obviously). And new for autumn are some beautiful full crisp silk skirts that I see with a little cashmere cardi. The British-made line is completed by leather belts with a selection of detachable buckles and some gorgeous Italian and Spanish-made leather boots (sensibly on or below the knee!)
The line isn't huge - just a few well-chosen styles, available in a number of fabric and colour ways, and prices hover somewhere between high street and designer. And as there are limited numbers of each style produced, when they is gone they is gone, so if you fall in love with a piece don't dither over it.
